What can we expect from the Apple iPhone 14?

Apple’s iPhone 13 release saw a mix of emotions. While some were excited about a new Apple handset, others were left feeling unsatisfied. The iPhone 13 introduced a handful of changes over the previous iPhone 12 including, Apple’s new A15 Bionic chip, a brighter screen, higher storage options and two new colours pink and green. These were the only changes the iPhone 13 had to offer which is why most felt it was just a glorified iPhone 12 with a new camera placement rather than a fully-fledged new iPhone.

Design & Display
The iPhone 14 is set to be a huge release but with several months still to go before the big reveal, what do we already know about the handset? This year's iPhone line-up may be changing as the last two revisions have come with a mini model, something that has turned out to be unpopular with Apple’s customers thus prompting the termination of the iPhone mini family. Apple are expected to be focusing all its attention on its larger flagship devices with the 6.1” iPhone 14 & 14 Pro and a 6.7” iPhone 14 Max & 14 Pro Max.

The Apple Notch has been around on iPhones since 2017 so it’s easy to say it’s cemented itself into Apple’s design philosophy. After almost 5 years we may be seeing the end of the notch legacy. While previously Apple’s iPhone notch housed all the relevant sensors for face ID components and of course the selfie camera, we will likely be seeing an “oval-pill” designed hole punch in the top of the iPhone 14 to replace the notch. There may be two side by side: one for the camera and one for the sensor. Whilst this is set to be a huge leap forward in design, the notch-less iPhone is rumoured to only be available on the Pro models, with the iPhone 14 and 14 Max still adopting the notch for its design.

Since the iPhone 6’s release in 2014, iPhones have always had protruding camera designs which had been a staple of smartphone design culture up until late 2020 when many manufacturers started to adopt seamless camera designs on their flagships. This year Apple may be releasing a thicker bodied iPhone that allows for the camera bump to be eliminated thus allowing it to sit flush with the rest of the rear chassis. What else? The iPhone 14 is likely to feature a vapour chamber system for improved thermal design to accommodate the A16 bionic chip.

Camera & Internals
Every year Apple release their iPhones with a new revision of their bionic chips and with the iPhone 13 coming with an A15 chip it’s more than likely the iPhone 14 is going to come with an A16 bionic chip. This is all good but what does it mean? Well, a new A16 Bionic chip means that we can expect: improved battery efficiency, faster in-app performance and greater AI camera performance.

Let’s talk about the camera. We can expect the iPhone 14 and 14 Max to continue utilising the 12MP sensor that is seen on the 1112 and 13 with improved AI to improve the imaging quality over its predecessors. What you may not have expected to see is the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max with a 48MP camera including 8K recording capabilities. The 48MP is set to be a huge upgrade as this can allow the camera to capture 4x more detail than the standard 12MP camera. This coupled with the AI capabilities of the new A16 Bionic chip we can expect to see some exceptional images, something we can see being a worthy competitor for the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra.

There is still more to learn about what the iPhone 14 will have to offer, but that will become clearer closer to the time of release. We are speculating this to be around the second week of September 2022.

All in all, the iPhone 14 is set to be the best Apple handset we’ve seen since the iPhone X and we’re excited to see what Apple have in store for us later this year.
